It was always intended that there would eventually be a Right Hand Drive Citroen SM, but world events conspired against it ever going into full production. However 3 official cars were produced. At least they are claimed to be official; they were converted by the Citroen dealership Middleton Motors but the work was financed by Citroen. It was hoped that by releasing the car in right hand drive form sales in the UK would improve. They didn't. With everything stripped out the SM has a mostly symmetrical bulkhead/firewall about the centerline, so conversion is theoretically easy. However no right hand steering rack was available so Middleton decided to turn over the LHD drive rack and made a modified steering column input section composed of a vertical gear tower to invert the steering direction to the correct response. The clutch presented a problem as the master cylinder would have projected into the engine. The master cylinder is mounted on the firewall symmetrically to its LHD position, and connected to the clutch pedal via a transverse shaft arrangement running through/behind the brake pedal assembly. The original fitting of clutch fluid supply from the main LHM reservoir was replaced with a LHM brake fluid reservoir from a disc braked Ami mounted on the bulkhead feeding direct. The dashboard was moulded in glass fibre as were various other items, and the steering column was passed straight through the evaporator assembly. The car feels slightly odd to drive if you are used to the LHD model. Most of the minor switches were not moved as was often the case at the time. The pictures below can be enlarged.
